ABOUT THE EQUALS RECORD
The Equals Record is the online companion to Equals in Print (coming late spring 2013). The purpose of the Equals Record is to complement the content found in print, to utilize web-based forms of expression that would not be suitable for a magazine, and to cultivate a spirit of community.
WHAT THE EQUALS RECORD PUBLISHES
The Equals Record publishes multidisciplinary content, such as essays, photos essays, and short videos, focused on issues of timely or timeless significance to women. We’re interested in discussions related to relationships, families, work, society and politics, religion and spirituality, parenting, art and design, travel, etc. We’re particularly interested in content that explores themes of evolution, teaching and learning, traditions, and love, as those themes will be present in our print publication. We appreciate thoughtful and personal discussions of these issues, but also love to see fun and humor!
For written material, we expect the majority of the content to be in the form of short essays, but we’re also open to interviews, reviews or discussions of artistic works, travel essays, or other nonfiction explorations of a theme. Fiction and poetry will not be considered for publication.
We’re open to a range of submission lengths. In general, written content should be between 500 and 1200 words. If you need more words than that, please consider splitting your submission into a two-part story.
In some cases, we may suggest revisions for length or clarity.
ANONYMITY & RESPECTFUL STORYTELLING
In our quest to provide authentic and meaningful content, we expect to receive at least some submissions of a sensitive nature. If a contributor would like to publish his or her work anonymously, we will respect that decision online and in any personal or professional discussions of our work. Please consider changing names and identifying details in stories that deal with sensitive topics. If you would like to submit anonymously, please contact us.
We hope to cultivate a healthy and inspiring community on the Equals Record. Because communities take time to grow, we will be moderating comments for the foreseeable future. We’d be pleased if you would check in and respond to comments once or twice and reply, if it seems natural. If you are uncomfortable with opening your post to comments, we’re willing to close comments on occasion; however, we heavily advise against closing comments as we’re fostering a supportive atmosphere.
We encourage image submissions both on their own and as a part of written submissions. Please submit jpeg images that are smaller than 960px wide at 72dpi. If your image is chosen for publication in print, we will contact you about specifications then. Please send only images that belong to you or that you have permission to use for this purpose.
Yes, please! Please upload your video to Vimeo or YouTube, and send us the link. In general, shorter videos (fewer than 3 minutes) work better, but we also understand that there is subject matter that requires more time.
