Generosity in Marriage

Generosity in Marriage

Mara Kofoed

Have you seen this wonderful article in the NY Times Magazine about how little acts of generosity are found to be prevalent in very happy marriages? This article has been a good little reminder for me. You see, my husband is a very, very self-sufficient man.  He takes care of things.  He makes the best [...] Jun 27, 2012

One of the Worst Parts About Getting a Divorce: Telling Children

One of the Worst Parts About Getting a Divorce: Telling Children

Mara Kofoed

Telling people about the divorce was excruciating. Even after it was no longer ‘new’ news to me, it was still sad to tell people who were hearing it for the first time.  A year later, some people still hadn’t heard—perhaps they were old friends returning to Brooklyn for a visit.  And then I’d have to [...] Jun 20, 2012

The Sock Animals That Saved My Life

The Sock Animals That Saved My Life

Mara Kofoed

When my first husband very resolutely told me that he no longer loved me & started voicing his more-determined-than-ever desire to end our marriage, it was a very strange time in our household!  I knew this time it was different than I’d ever seen before.  I knew it really, really was coming to an end [...] May 30, 2012

I Thought I was a Good Lover

I Thought I was a Good Lover

Mara Kofoed

After 30 years, I thought I was a good lover. I thought I was kind, loving, thoughtful, non-judgmental, accepting, patient, and knew how to put up with someone’s ups and downs over and over and over, without turning my back on them.  I gave so much of myself to my relationships.  I thought I was [...] May 23, 2012

Preparing a Funeral for a Baby and Feeling the Influence of a Life

Preparing a Funeral for a Baby and Feeling the Influence of a Life

Mara Kofoed

One of my dearest friends—my oldest friend from my 12 years in Brooklyn—spent many years trying to get pregnant.  She did IVF, and it worked!  She was pregnant!  We had so much excitement for this couple.  Our Brooklyn community of friends was overjoyed.  We hosted a ridiculously awesome shower at my home.  And all seemed [...] May 16, 2012

Mother’s Day for an Infertile Woman

Mother’s Day for an Infertile Woman

Mara Kofoed

Mother’s Day is very much celebrated at the church I attend in Brooklyn.  On those Sundays, a couple of people from the congregation are usually asked to speak on the subject of Motherhood.  Last year, I was asked to speak.  At the time, I don’t think the person asking me realized that I had been [...] May 10, 2012

Learning to be Happy, With or Without a Baby

Learning to be Happy, With or Without a Baby

Mara Kofoed

During my first year of infertility, I remember feeling sad about my life when I heard that other friends were pregnant. We’re talking…mmm…maybe I’ll cut out of this party early because I can’t hide these tears any longer.  No thank you, I’ll just sit this 35th baby shower out.  Don’t you dare hand me a [...] Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...
